Rep. Charlie Wilson (D - Texas) died today. If you haven't seen the Tom Hanks movie about him, Charlie Wilson's War, you should. Although he was a rascal of the first order, he was also an American above all else and was instrumental in changing American foreign policy towards Afghanistan, arming the nationals and eventually sending the Soviets packing. He represented a time when there was a bipartisan American foreign policy and folks on both sides of the aisle recognized that The U.S. has vital national interests that must be looked after.
