Pete Seeger - If I Had a Hammer

Pete Seeger, the folk singer, recently died. The crooner of such songs as If I Had a Hammer was mourned as an American hero by much of the media. Well, in fact, not so much. John Fund of National Review fills in the glossy blanks in the mainstream news accounts and tells us who Seeger really was.

He became a Communist at 17 and remained unrepentantly so until 1949 when he dropped his name from the membership rolls, but still described himself as a "communist" (small "c") for decades after. It wasn't until 1995 until he 'fessed up that maybe he had been a tad slavish in his devotion to the authoritarian creed and its tyrants. An example was before Germany attacked the Soviet Union in WWII and the two wary giants had signed a non-aggression pact, Seeger publicly defended Hitler. When Stalin switched his tune after Germany invaded, so did Seeger. Profiles in courage.

I liked a number of Seeger's songs, but the grandfatherly old guy consistently chose the wrong, the evil side of history. Fund repeats a warning from John Roche, the president of Americans for Democratic Action, a liberal political interest group, that bears repeating:

If authoritarianism of the right or left ever comes to America it will come surrounded by patriotism and show business,” he told me. “It will be made fashionable by talented people like Pete Seeger.”

Good is Bad; Bad is Good - Don't You Get it?

Paul Greenberg is commenting in this piece about the "Orwellization" of our language, specifically as applied to an abortion "rights" march in Arkansas as reported by the local newspaper. How did killing babies become a "right?" Good question. Greenberg replies thusly:

"George Orwell described what was going on here in his classic and all too prescient essay, "Politics and the English Language." In it, he noted:

'In our time, political speech and writing are largely the defense of the indefensible. ... Thus political language has to consist largely of euphemism, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness. Defenseless villages are bombarded from the air, the inhabitants driven out into the countryside, the cattle machine-gunned, the huts set on fire with incendiary bullets: this is called pacification. Millions of peasants are robbed of their farms and sent trudging along the roads with no more than they can carry: this is called transfer of population or rectification of frontiers. People are imprisoned for years without trial, or shot in the back of the neck or sent to die of scurvy in Arctic lumber camps: this is called elimination of unreliable elements.'

Now millions of innocent lives are destroyed in the womb, even before they see their first light of day, and this is called abortion rights."

Spot on. Similarly "affordable healthcare" is really "unaffordable healthcare" or not healthcare at all, "equality" means some are more equal to redress supposed inequality, and so on and so on. It is definitely Orwell's barnyard out there and getting worse all the time.

Meaningful language is one of the first steps to getting a handle on our situation. It's time to clean out the Newspeaks and send a lot of Plainspeaks to D.C. and to our state capitals if we want to get a handle on our huge problems.

Another Shining Example of Government Management in Oregon

"TriMet needs to fix a culture where low morale, secrecy, safety problems and more then $1 billion in unfunded financial obligations threaten to wreck the public transit agency, a new state audit has found.

#1 Again! Yay!

Guess who was #1 in the whole country with the highest income taxes? That's right - we are, good 'ol Oregon in a tie with California. This page incidentally is an advice piece for job applicants as to where they may not want to go if they want to keep their hard-earned dinero. And Gov. K wants to raise taxes, again. Way to go with job creation Democrats!!

Sonvagun!

I have been astounded by the people that God is gathering into the fold over the last year or so. I have blogged about journalist Kirsten Powers but now comes another one that really surprised me - Malcolm Gladwell.

For those of you who have not read Gladwell's books and articles, they are excellent. Books like The Tipping Point, Outliers, and others are very well written and hold your attention throughout. He is also an extremely engaging speaker. He is also very much my idea of an Eastern secular intellectual, but one that God reached out and returned to his original Christian faith through one of the books Gladwell has recently written. Today's Breakpoint has the story and it's a good one. It just shows to go you that God is sovereign and brings in all sorts of people to His Kingdom, Malcolm Gladwell being just the latest surprise. There will be many more, I am sure.

Good Guys Win a Skirmish in Religious Freedom Fight

The Little Sisters of the Poor is an order of nuns dedicated to providing end of life care to the poor and elderly and they are a target of the Obama Administration on the abortion issue. The Regime says that although they don't meet Obamacare's definition of a "religious employer" they still don't have to provide such coverage directly - they just have to sign an application requesting a waiver and directing their insurer to pay up if the government so decrees in the future. This is a trick that would fool only a lawyer and the nuns said "Not so fast!" and sued the Feds over the issue.

townhall.com/tipsheet/kevinglass/2014/01/24/supreme-court-continues-injunction-against-contraception-mandate-n1784360

Yesterday the full Supreme Court issued an injunction against the Feds prohibiting enforcement of the rules against the nuns pending consideration of the case on the merits by the Court. This does not necessarily mean that the Order will win on the merits but their are several important items to note.

The original stay was issued by Justice Sotomayor and the full Court has now backed it up. Secondly, the Court said very specifically that the Order did not have to file the formal application or sign the directive to its carrier. Finally, a stay is not issued unless there is a good chance that the appellant will win on appeal and a substantial right will be irreparably damaged.

Whether this is the case that the Court will actually select to make a definitive ruling on this issue is uncertain, but the Court did affirm the protection of the First Amendment to this worthy order of nuns and backed off an Administration that is totally unconcerned with niceties like religious freedom under the First Amendment that interfere with its agenda.

There's a Pulse!

Oregon's economy is actually adding some jobs, which is a good thing. The state economist says that 4,400 jobs were added last month versus the national picture where jobs were cut. The unemployment rate was down, but that is an unreliable because so many people have simply given up looking for work and are no longer factored into the rate calculation. Currently in Oregon 132,000 people are in that category and another 142,000 are underemployed. Still, some good news is better than no good news.

We're From the Government and We're Here to Help You

A Michigan family of four, all of whom suffer from disabilities, had their Blue Cross policy canceled because of Obamacare, were denied coverage under the super duper Obamacare policy, and finally ended up with an "approved" policy that will cost them 400% more in deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses. The article notes that Michigan's two Democratic senators did not comment on the family's plight. I shouldn't wonder.

God's Small Platoons

Chuck Colson often said that God's work in this world gets done by His "small platoons." A platoon in military parlance is a tactical operating unit typically of 40-60 soldiers. Capital Park Wesleyan of Salem is one such small platoon.

Recently they held a mortgage-burning ceremony to mark the payoff of a $419,000 mortgage that the church had taken out 17 years ago when it had only 100 members. The purpose was to build a community center for its use and for the surrounding lower income neighborhood. It has worked like a champ and is now an integral part of the neighborhood fabric.

Nicely done Capital Park and the other 60 churches in the Salem area doing the same thing!

The Whole Sorry Story Behind the Cover Oregon Mess

"Oregon, a state of 4 million people at the forefront of “progressive” health reform, isn’t being touted by liberals these days as a model. That’s because Cover Oregon, its state-run health-care exchange, is the worst in the country, so bad that officials there may decide soon to unplug it and hook up to the faltering federal exchange."

So starts the National Review story by John Fund. This is the short version.

The long version was in The Oregonian and on Oregon Live this last Sunday. Gov.
Kitzhaber says he "wasn't in the loop." Really, the CEO of the State of Oregon? Remember Harry Truman, "The buck stops here!"? Apparently not with Gov. K. A $300M + national laughing stock of a program shows his management skills for the whole world to see - and guffaw at - and yet he has the temerity to run again for governor? Amazing! If the people of Oregon are so stupid as to elect him again, then we get what we deserve, e.g. - being the butt of national jokes for another four years. His legacy will live on.

The Oregon Way!

We are told by the politicians that people are starving in the streets, their healthcare needs are not being met, crisis - Crisis - CRISIS! And so what do they do? In Oregon they build a bridge, of course!

The Portland Trolley Bridge across the Willamette River is costing an estimated $135M. Not wanting to look like a piker, the State of Oregon wants to pay for a new bridge across the Columbia River all by itself (The Washington Legislature having killed their piece of the funding) and it is estimated at $450M. I am sure, sure that it will come in at that price if the project moves ahead. Finally, the City of Salem, with a resounding "Me too!" (albeit in a much smaller voice) wants $10M to build a pedestrian/bicycle bridge from downtown to Minto Island Park, on the theory apparently that transients need convenient ingress/egress from the homeless encampment that will surely spring up there as it has in Wallace Marine Park in West Salem. People starving? People dying? Build a bridge! Yup - that's the Oregon Way!

Kanye the Profit

Seems Kanye West has titled his new album "Yeezus" and some bonehead fan took it seriously and has founded a church honoring the "Profit." I suspect that West is up for a little worship, especially in the form of gross sales. Regarding the religious bit, though, any time you want to walk across my swimming pool big guy your humble servant awaits.

The Big Rotten Apple

"On Friday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D), who has been widely discussed as a possible 2016 presidential candidate, told Susan Arbetter of The Capitol Pressroom that 'extreme conservatives' should leave the state. He said that 'extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay' have 'no place in the state of New York.' "

Truth be told, Andy, I have never been much taken with the place and I will now be sure not to visit either. Pity the poor conservative schlubs who are stuck in your state. Progressive tolerance - Mussolini style.

Mini-Ice Age?

Short answer - who knows? Scientists have at least raised the possibility. In the 1600s something called the "Maunder Minimum" occurred when sun spots were at their lowest level then observed. Europe had a mini-Ice Age replete with oddities like England's Thames River freezing over. The bottom line is that the weather is going to do what the weather is going to do and it appears to be much more directly tied to what that giant star does that sits 93M miles away from us than the puny efforts of man. All this baloney about "climate change" is just that - baloney and man will have to adjust and adapt, as he always has and not suffer from such a case of hubris as to think that by outlawing incandescent light bulbs we are going to change the course of anything except our ability to read a magazine in our own houses.

Fast Cash

Windows XP has been the standard business computer operating system in this country for 10 years. Come April, though, Microsoft is walking away from supporting it. My office is painfully aware of this fact because we just upgraded to Windows 7 and had to buy new computers in the process as the old ones weren't sufficiently powerful to effectively run 7. Guess what else runs on XP? Answer: 95% of all ATM machines. Will there be another national banking crisis? Will the government have to bail out banks (again)? Will our financial system collapse? More importantly, will I be able to get $20 cash to pay for my haircut? Stay tuned.

While America Sleeps

China doesn't. They just launched a hypersonic reentry vehicle designed to deliver a nuclear payload at 8,000 mph but be able to fly a complex route, not just a ballistic trajectory like a missile. It is hard enough to hit a ballistic warhead with an anti-missile interceptor, but a steerable hypersonic vehicle is geometrically more difficult because its route is not predictable. In the meantime we are cutting our defense budget and neglecting to modernize our own forces. Enjoy the nap, America - at this rate we will soon be waking up to a Chinese dinner.

You Killed Beethoven

The story goes that a medical school ethics professor gave a case study to his nascent doctors as follows: the mother is pregnant and has TB; father has syphilis; 4 children already, one of whom has died and another is terminal. What do you recommend to the mother regarding her pregnancy? The majority of the class said "abortion." The professor congratulated them saying "You just killed Beethoven."

Now a movie has been made about this story, Crescendo, by Jason Jones who has produced award-winning movies like Bella and The Stoning of Soraya M. The executive producer is Justin Bieber's mother, Pattie Mallette. It is an exceptionally well done short film and drives home why every life is special. Jones own story is interesting.

At age 17 his girlfriend became pregnant. Her father forced her to abort the baby and to this day Jones mourns the decision. Their daughter would have been 23 years old had she lived. The pain of this tragedy is etched most vividly in Bella but it has also led to a general reverence for life in Jones' other works. As we have become more and more a visual culture, this is the type of work in which people can understand most clearly what is good, and right and true. May Mr. Jones prosper in his life's mission.

Weather Wimps

Are we becoming a bunch of weather wimps? Scientists think that may be the case after all the whining and complaining about the recent cold snap. Historically, deep freezes have come along about every 4 years on average. That margin has lengthened a little recently, so when one does hit, it seems unprecedented. Even on the coldest day of the recent plunge in temperatures, it was only the 55th coldest day on record since 1900, so c'mon America - button up and get out there and git 'er done!

The Distant Howls of the Dogs of War

Victor Davis Hanson writes a very prescient piece in today's Townhall about China today paralleling the Japan of the 1930s and the eerily similar American response. If you remember, the earlier march to empire brought us to Pearl Harbor and finally ended over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You cannot avoid repeating history if you refuse to recognize it.

I've Got a Gub!

That's a classic line from Woody Allen's Take the Money and Run when he botches a bank robbery because the teller can't read his note demanding cash and threatening that he has a "gub." What's a gub? It happened for real the other day in Antioch, California.

The would-be robber hit a Wells Fargo branch and handed a note to the teller that they couldn't read. She called her manager over to help her make sense of it and in the meantime the frustrated criminal left the bank. He was collared by the cops a little while later at a nearby shopping center.

What is our educational system coming to? Pass state standards for bank robbery notes? We need higher standards!

This is Where We Are Headed

Do you wonder why Obama and Reid and Pelosi and so-called Progressives have focused on healthcare as the central piece of their agenda? It's because they can sink their tentacles of control into every aspect of our lives - it's for our own good as we are too stupid to know what's good for us. Here is an example of the degree of control imposed in the EU:

"The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration recently discovered that Danish cinnamon rolls and twists contained more coumarin — a chemical compound in the most common variety of cinnamon — than EU rules allow. Excessive intake of coumarin can cause liver damage.
So the agency asked Danish bakers to reduce the amount of cinnamon they sprinkle in the dough for sweet treats like the "kanelsnegel" (cinnamon roll) and "kanelstang" (cinnamon twist).

Danish bakers protested, saying the EU limit is too strict, and would make it hard, if not impossible, to make their cherished pastries
."

Who cares if Danish pastries can't be made any more - it's what's best for you that counts! No sweet rolls, no Coke, no this, no that, jump higher, roll over, fetch, give me your paw! Is this where we Americans want to end up? Not this American.

An Ace Passes

An American fighter great died recently. His most famous exploit was chasing a burning German Me-109 under the Eiffel Tower where he dispatched him. That was great flying! It rallied the astounded French forces on the ground to drive the Germans out of Paris and is still remembered in France as one of the greatest feats of WWII. Rest in peace, sir. You have earned it.

Canary in the Coal Mine

Canaries used to be kept in coal mines because leaking lethal gas would kill them before becoming lethal to miners, who could then safely escape. A hospital in Houston is serving the same function regarding Obamacare, having not paid staff for several weeks because it has not received Medicare payments from the Feds under the new Obamacare "system." Of course, in both cases the safety of everyone depends on someone paying attention to the little yellow bird. Someone? Anyone?
